While the weather is throwing a few late curve balls our way, we are still planning for Spring to arrive….eventually! One of the most beloved Spring traditions in Mountain Lakes is the Annual Trout Derby which will take place on April 8th from 8am- 10am at Birchwood Lake (rain or shine).
Children and their parents are invited to help stock the Lake with more than 600 trout the day before the derby on Friday, April 7th from 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. If you plan to help- please bring a good sized (3-5 gallon) bucket (a sand pail is too small). Buckets can be purchased at the lake stocking.
The Borough relies on generous resident contributions for this event each year. The committee therefore asks for a contribution of $10.00 per child or $20.00 per family to fish at the Derby. Each year we attempt to have the Derby pay for itself through your generous contributions so that money is not taken from the recreation budget.
Cast Off Time – The Derby will start at 8:00 A.M. and end at 10:00 A.M. Saturday April 8. Registration begins at 7:00 A.M. and continues throughout the Derby. The Derby is open to CHILDREN of Mountain Lakes residents and employees 16 YEARS OF AGE and younger. Adults must be accompanied by a child. The winner will receive a personal trophy and there is also a Mountain Lakes Trout Derby trophy which remains on display in Mountain Lakes all year. All children who catch a fish are eligible for a prize.
Prizes – Over $800 in prizes will be awarded at the prize desk. Throughout the Derby – prizes are awarded for the any trout caught and at the end of the Derby prizes are awarded for the longest trout caught: both grand and runner up prizes.
Contributions can be made at the lake stocking, the derby or, mailed in advance. Please make Checks payable to: Borough of Mountain Lakes (Memo: TROUT DERBY) Mail to: Mountain Lakes Recreation, 400 Boulevard, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046.
Refreshments (coffee, hot chocolate, tea, water and donuts), bait, souvenir hats and t-shirts will be available for purchase at the derby.
Thanks go to the Mountain Lakes PBA Local 310, the Recreation Commission, Borough Council for their support of this event. We look forward to your support and seeing you at the lake stocking and the Derby.
