Borough of Mountain Lakes

Lakes Management Committee

October 2002 Issues

Chairman's report:

Given by Manager Webb

Discussion of goose issue - The Manager has discussed this with and will be meeting with someone representing the USDA on goose euthanizing.  Hanover euthanized 200+ geese.

Island Beach had a relatively low fecal coliform bacteria count and Birchwood a relatively high count last week.

              .

Manager's Report:

* 2002 Lakes cleaning project.  547 cubic yards of material removed.  Hydrorake costs about $34 a cubic yard; with DPW costs, $42.  Not as cheap as the initial experience where we were able to use the backhoe for many areas.  The Canal will be the primary job next year.  Substantial depths of material were removed this year from Grunden's Pond and Wildwood Lake.  It looks as though the stream into Wildwood will need cleaning every other year.

* Dam Update.  Crystal Lake bids have come in, saving approximately $100,000.  Birchwood has been re-designed and plans are at DEP.  Discussion of the current lake levels.

* Birchwood docks A, B, and C, are done.  Dock D material is scheduled to arrive.  Discussion of electrical system

* Outline of items in budget.

* Committee walk-around for Sunday 10/13, starting at 1:00 at the Borough Hall.

Allied Biological:

* Treatment season over.

* Ongoing fecal coliform counts as requested by the Committee.  That will continue for a couple of weeks to get a baseline.  Discussion of the sampling protocol.  Discussion of geese as a source of fecal coliform bacteria.

* Dye tests were conducted at the beach restrooms and showed no leaks.

Old Business:

*Public Awareness

·    Allied Biological looked for Web sites to which we could direct landowners to get advice on native plants for goose deterring borders.  Examples follow:

www.shorelandmanagement.org

Because these sites are useful but do not simply bear upon the issue of native plants for lakeside borders, Allied offers a list of recommended emergent plants for the Mountain Lakes area.  The list follows below.

·    Discussion of recommendation to Council on goose management.  The Borough Manager will speak to the Lakes Management Chair about the format and coordination with other Committeees' recommendation.

Plants recommended by Allied Biological for the Mountain Lakes area:

Lake borders, emergents, planting in root-wet areas
