Borough
of Mountain Lakes
Lakes
Management Advisory Committee
Issues
May 2004
• Review of the Lakes walk, inspection tour by
Committee and Borough Manager. Focus on
the new dams and dam work.
• Committee reviewed the cleaning project and
the removal of recently deposited plant material.
• The Committee moved to support the Manager in
a proposal to Council to draw down Mountain and Wildwood lakes in late
September to perform maintenance. Planned
total of two feet drawn down. In
preparation for hurricane season the lakes are usually drawn down one foot in
the late summer. The draw down will cease about 11/1/04 to allow for normal
replenishment during the winter.
• Discussion of Canal cleaning.
• The Manager noted to the Committee that there
will be increased police patrols of the beach areas to control dog access and
other non-permitted access.
• The USDA has begun addling goose eggs. Culling last year seems to have helped: only
four nests found now. USDA will review the
culling program for this year.
• The Committee
unanimously approved a motion of support for continuing a goose culling
program.
• Manager reported on behalf of Allied Biological
that there had been early algae growth in all the lakes.
• Discussion of recent Allied Biological
reports; how detritus moves in the lakes; impact of flooding.
• Discussion of Wildwood dike plantings and
Allied Biological planting capacity.
• Discussed fecal coliform baseline measurement. Virtually nil in April.
• Discussed non-native fish in Mountain
Lake. (Golden Shiner or Notemigonus
crysoleucus.)
• The Committee discussed communication with
Borough residents. Discussion of Home
& School Bulletin for June; possible flyer; Web site.
