Borough of Mountain Lakes
Lakes Management Advisory Committee Issues
June 2005
l The Manager has been answering residents' questions about
lake bottom cleaning and how the Borough assigns priorities.
l The Manager discussed goose control and the conclusion
of egg addling.
l Allied Biological reported lower levels of oxygen in
Birchwood's deeper water, with some stratification. If this keeps up it may
justify an aerator at Birchwood that would make an alum treatment possible and
might improve clarity on its own.
l The Committee reviewed Allied’s monthly lake by lake
report. Of note this month:
1)
To
date the coliform counts are good.
2)
Mountain
Lake has a moderately high algal organisms count, but primarily a species which
will self-limit (Ankistrodesmus).
l The Committee discussed the generally excellent health
of fish in the lakes. One apparently
diseased fish was determined by State Fish and Wildlife to have a fungal
infection in an injury rather than a tumor or parasites. Fish sampled included:
Largemouth
Bass (Micropterus salmoides) (http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/fishspecs/sunfitxt.html#largemouthbass)
Calico
Bass (Black Crappie, Pomoxis nigromaculatus) (http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/fishspecs/sunfitxt.html#blackcrappie)
Bluegill
(Lepomis macrochirus) (http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/fish/fishspecs/sunfitxt.html#bluegill).
