Private Memorials on Public Property
Policy
No memorial shall be constructed, nor shall any offer of a memorial to be constructed upon public property in the Borough be accepted, except pursuant to the policies hereinafter set forth:
- Trees planted at the direction of the Shade Tree Commission. No plaque or commemorative marker erected in conjunction with the tree.
- Public appurtenances such as park benches, information boards, or other improvements may be considered for a memorial provided that:
- Such appurtenance has been identified for replacement, improvement or expansion by the Borough Council.
- No plaque or commemorative marker installed with appurtenance. A small name and date inscription not to exceed 15 square inches can be affixed to appurtenance.
- All costs associated with the memorial including the cost of Borough labor are to be borne by the sponsor.
- Final design subject to approval by Borough Council.
- Memorials bearing the names of profit-making organizations shall not be erected on public lands.
- No memorial shall be approved for acceptance before the Borough receives funds from the sponsors to provide for the purchase and/or manufacture and installation of the memorial.
- A memorial accepted by the Borough Council may be moved to another location if deemed necessary.
- In the event the memorial is damaged or otherwise rendered useless, the Borough is under no obligation to replace the memorial.
