Recreation Committee Meeting – January 19, 2010

 

 

Present:   Debbie Bednar, Celia Flynn, Mike Prevoznik and Scott Richards

 

Absent:   Dede Conlan, Rich Mancuso, Dave Marshall and Pete Sentowski

 

Steve Shaw has replaced Dan Happer as the Council’s representative to the Rec Commission.  James Smith and Denise Brennan have stepped down from the Commission.  The Commission thanked Dan, James and Denise for their many years of service and dedication to the Commission and our community.  The Commission will search for 1 or 2 additional members.  Volunteers welcome.

 

 

1.      Minutes - December 15, 2009 minutes were approved.

 

  1. Director’s Report

§         PCA (see attached) – Boonton is planning to offer another coaches clinic in late February and Boonton Township will host a parent’s clinic in March.

§         Centennial Event – All rec events sponsored by the Recreation Commission will have a theme during the Centennial year.

§         Clean Communities Grant (attached 2008 reports) – Celia provided an update of the New Jersey Clean Communities Report for 2008 (copy attached).  Another grant was received for 2009-2010 (fiscal year).

§         Assignments for Commission Members – Celia to send list of Rec activities to Commission members to enlist volunteers to run the program.

 

  1. Programs

§         Briarcliff Baseball/Softball Busing issues – School buses will be coordinated through the school system to help decrease expenses

§         Track remains popular with young children but they are short of volunteers to run the program.

 

  1. Summer

§         Rec – Summer rec will be starting in June.  Celia is starting to plan for 2010 summer rec program.  She is looking to offer mini programs after rec.  She is also considering having a K-5th grade (Wildwood) and 6th-8th grade (high school).  The Commission agreed to raise the prices to $65 (prior to May 1) and $80 (after May 1).  No refunds after summer camp starts.  Summer lax camp run by Fusco and White will require they get their own insurance.

§         Island Beach Shack – lost money in 2009.  Celia will be looking to redesign the program running the Island Beach Shack.

§         The Commission recommended increasing the beachtag fee from $20/person, $75/family to $25/person, $100/family.  Celia will take this to Council.

§         Easter Egg Hunt: March 27, rain date March 28

§         July 4 Fun Races, rain date July 5
