7:30 PM Borough Hall

Present:  Commissioners - Bednar, Caputo, Mancuso, Sentowski, Shertzer, Spoto, Terhune, Wright; Recreation Director – Flynn; Board of Education Liaison – Mitchell; Swim Director – Conlan

Absent: Richards; Borough Council Liaison – Gormally

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A motion to approve the September 26th, 2012 Minutes was made by Deb Shertzer and seconded by Mark Caputo.   All were in favor.

Swim Director Report – See Report attached.  The commission agreed that in future the swim team should be self-funding.   The commission will communicate these goals to with swim team in order that they can cover all coaching costs and their share of lifeguard expenses when preparing their 2013 budgets.

DirectorÕs Report  - Communication about Hub Lakes programs has been poor.  Many residents are unaware of what is offered and participation is low. The annual fee to participate is $1601.50.   If we continue to be members of this organization, we need to find a new Mountain Lakes Liaison.  Participation at present is: 4 male golfers and 4 female, 10 bowlers, 15 volleyball players, 0 participants in baseball and horseshoes, and 25 softball players.  Mountain Lakes always hosts the track event with approximately 20-40 ML participants.  In addition the youth swim team participates in their league.  Dede feels that the swim team pays an additional fee for this.  Efforts will be made to increase community awareness of the programs available.  Pete Sentowski will follow up with the swim team to see if they are paying an additional fee.  Deb Bednar will get information on events, meeting and participants from Christine Whitehouse.  A decision will be made as to whether to continue and how to staff at the next meeting.

Recreation Committee Reports -

Programs and Events – Soft Bone sponsored Halloween event will be run on Sunday, Oct 28th.  There may be a zombie walk at 4pm.  There are plans in the works for a cook-off in January.  Communication continues to be a key issue.  Mountain Lakes Living is willing to act as a Communication Vehicle.  Celia suggested that she could do a Constant Contact eBlast as a regular communication on Rec programs.

Sports – The subcommittee plan to meet with GirlÕs Lacrosse to discuss a possible summer program.  In addition, the sub-committee will present recommendations for Recreation Sports Programs at the next meeting.  Celia asked that Track be a top priority and commented that something must be put in place by next month.  The BOE will ask that High School track coaches to participate in resolving the track availability issues.

Cathy Mitchell reported that there will be a meeting regarding the installation of lights soon.  BOE has asked that Recreation make their strong support for the project known in conjunction with Laker Sports.

Finance – Working on why Rec has become an accounting function.

Facilities – We are still waiting to get feedback from James Smith on School Dude.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:35pm

BEACH REPORT 2012

The beaches opened on Saturday, June 23rd.  Birchwood was staff-

ed until August 23rd and Island until September 1st.

Our staff consisted of fourteen regular guards and three substi-

tutes.  I had three college graduates, seven high school gradu-

ates and four high school students on staff plus subs.

Everyone was recertified in Lifeguard training, First Aid, CPR

and AED.

Barbara Seeger and I taught a CPR class for the Sailing and

Swim team staff.  We also taught two sessions of swimming

lessons.

The Lakeland Conference Championship and The Hub Lakes

Diving Championship were held at Birchwood Lakes this year.

Vicki Allison ran the Birchwood Beach concession.  The Island

Beach concession remained closed for lack of a proprietor.

We had a Guard party at my house in August. We all had a great

Time- much camaraderie and many laughs.

A new rescue board has been ordered for Island Beach. We will

need four new chairs for next season. The new picnic tables are

very nice but the center plank on all of them is bowed and needs

to be replaced.

The bathroom doors at Island Beach are disintegrating and are

in need of replacement.

Both beaches need to be weeded on a regular basis during the

Summer and not just when there is an event. I would like to see

some funds set aside for upgrades to our beach facilities, especially

Birchwood. An assessment and recommendations were made back

in 2004.  I would recommend that we revisit this.

Guest tag receipts              2011             2012

       Island                       $1088.75       $1571

       Birchwood                $  552.00       $ 796

       Punch cards             $2560.00        $2950

I would like to extend my thanks to Celia, the Borough Office staff

And the DPW for all their help during this past season. They are

always there when I need them.

                                                   Respectfully submitted,
