Mountain Lakes Shade Tree Commission

Special Meeting at the Esplanade July 2, 2009

Attending: B. Rosenthall, H. Carr, S. Marshall, M. Vyff, J. Best, L. Conner, J. Eveleth, D. McWilliams

Members of the Centennial Committee and the Garden Club have developed a preliminary plan for renewal of the Esplanade. The plan is in keeping with the original minimalistic design of the area. The suggested work will highlight the stonework, existing pergola and open space. Work would be completed in the upcoming months so the area will be ready for the townÕs centennial celebration in 2011.

Plan Highlights:

Existing trees will remain with the exception of two weeping mulberries near street and six cedars that are in between the lower garden and the street.

Several suggested plants are roses and clematis that would be planted along the pergolas. Small evergreen yews would be installed along the lower bank. Level, grassy space will be utilized for a centennial celebration including a possible concert in 2011.

General Comments: Stone walls should be featured when considering what to plant. It was suggested that some money be allocated to replace old light fixtures with historically correct, aesthetically pleasing fixtures. New trees should include at least one Cercis canadensis to replace one that died (five remain). Three to four trees should be planted to create a buffer for neighbors and to soften the power pole. Liriope on lower bank to remain.

D. McWilliams announced that $5,000 from ML beautification account will be earmarked for use by the STC.

Motion to remove 2 mulberry trees and 6 cedars in front of the wall at the Esplanade made by S. Marshall. Seconded by M. Vyff. All present voted in favor of tree removals.

Diseased oak at 4 Hillcrest was discussed. DPW will remove the small tree as soon as possible to prevent spread of disease.

Next meeting scheduled for September 10, 2009 at 8:30 am.
