Rain barrels in waiting

Sign up for your Rain Barrel now at the Borough Hall. They are going fast! The Rain Barrel Workshop is this Saturday from 2 to 4 at the High School Cafeteria. The supplier has gotten the used food grade barrels and is ready for Saturdays workshop. These barrels will help us reduce our water bills by using rain water for our gardens instead of municipal water. Mountain Lakes sewer prices have recently gone up and are expected to go up again soon. Sewer pricing is based on water usage. Watering our gardens with rainwater is a win/win for both us and the environment!

Spring is finally here! It’s time to get out, get moving, get rid of the accumulated junk from seasons past and prep your garden for the growing season. What started as Mountain Lakes’ Trash Day many years ago, has grown into EcoWeekend. Events were added on like Shredding Day, Blood Drive, Arbor Day, Woods & Lakes Run, & Community Clean-Up. This year, a couple of new events were added – Free Trees and Rain Barrel Workshop. All events work toward keeping our community clean, natural and healthy. Plan ahead so you can fit in more activities. Click on any of the orange highlighted event names for more specific information.

The Weekend will kick off on Friday, April 24th with the Shade Tree Commission’s Sign up for your rain barrels now. They are going fast! Our supplier has gotten them in and they are waiting for the Rain Barrel Workshop this weekend at the High School Cafeteria. Feel free to come for the presentation even if you don’t get a rain barrel.

Arbor Day Celebration at Wildwood School at 1:45pm. Dave Fewell, a Mountain Lakes High School Biology teacher, will be honored for planting tree saplings in our forests and in the students thoughts.

On Saturday, April 25th, there will be a full day of events taking place. The Fire Dept. will hold their Shredding Day from 8:00 to 11:00 am, and a Blood Drive from 8:00 am to 12 noon. Both at 400 Boulevard. Give blood and you can shred for free.

Trash Day for large waste disposal, plastic bag recycling, and vegetables oil recycling will be at the ML Recycling Center at 51 Pocono Road Friday and Saturday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Please remember you can bring your metals for recycling any other time for free. There is a carload charge on Trash Day.

As you leave Trash Day, pick up some Free Trees from the Shade Tree Commission, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, to replant our canopy lost in Sandy. This is a state wide campaign of the New Jersey State Forestry Service.

Plan to help your favorite Club, Team or Neighborhood do a Community Clean-Up of a local pocket park or ball field. Groups can choose an area in town to clean up, as we have done in previous years. So grab some friends and come out to help us continue to keep Mountain Lakes an eco-friendly town.

If you are over 30, you should be training for the 38th Annual Woods & Lakes Run which will start at Birchwood Lake, 10:00 am Saturday.

Rain Barrel Workshop is scheduled for Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the High School Cafeteria, sponsored by the Green Team. Sign up for your $25 rain barrel at the Borough Hall – first come first serve.
