Borough of Mountain Lakes
Lakes Management Advisory Committee Issues
May 2005
l The Manager discussed goose control and egg addling. Numbers are down significantly. The
following site has some information on one way the USDA manages egg
addling. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/pubs/tn_wseggoil.pdf.
l Allied Biological reported generally good clarity in
the lakes and normal algal growth.
l The Committee reviewed Allied’s survey maps of the
lakes and discussed sediment removal priorities. The Committee discussed the following points:
1)
Information
should be stored to record a baseline to determine change over time.
2)
The
timeframe for repeating surveys.
3)
The
level and nature of material that would justify a cleaning project. Allied pointed out that many materials move,
compact, and decompose over time.
4)
The
ability to place and operate equipment at various sites, and the ability to
remove collected materials.
5)
The
depth of material vs. depth of a lake.
6)
The
differences between cleaning the lakes and responding to appearance based requests
from residents.
l The Committee felt that the cleaning program has
covered the major areas after decades of accumulation and that the survey areas
did not warrant additional cleaning yet.
The Manager will review the smaller ponds. Borough Council controls funding for any future cleaning.
l The Committee felt that the cleaning program has helped
with the significant improvement in lake quality over the last several years. This has to be communicated to
residents. The Committee will work on a
Home and School Bulletin article.
