Management Advisory Committee Issues
September
2005
l There was a fecal coliform spike at Island Beach in the
late summer. Animal waste is the
primary candidate since the restroom system again passed a dye test.
l The Sunset dam is under study.
l The Committee discussed issues arising from the long
dry hot summer and treatment resistant algae species. Permissible levels of
treatment have not been sufficient. It
is likely that there will have to be alum treatments in 2006. The Committee, Manager, and Allied
Biological had hoped to avoid alum treatments in 2005. Not seeing pH issues in Mountain that would
preclude alum. Late summer algal bloom on Crystal. Stlll filamentous algae on
Wildwood.
l Low dissolved oxygen in Birchwood continues to be a
problem. Ongoing issue and unexpectedly
low for this time of year. Allied Biological has enough data to make
recommendations later this year concerning aerator.
l Allied Biological has proposed a zooplankton survey.
l The Committee discussed lakeshore walls and the
effective walling in of Mountain Lake : aesthetics (outside mission of the
Committee), legality of construction, impact on flora and fauna and balance of
lake.
l There were significant algal mats and turbidity in
Mountain Lake this summer. Filamentous and unicellular algae.
l There has been a proliferation of large inflatable
rafts. Landowners must be notified that
such rafts can not interfere with other use and must be returned to shore each
day.
