Borough of Mountain Lakes

Lakes Management Advisory Committee

Issues June 2006

l Discussion of bottom probing in Olive, Shadow, and Cove lakes.  There are points in Shadow with 4’ of apparent material accumulation.  There are problems near those points in terms of access for cleaning, due to slope and tree coverage.  The bulk of 2006 cleaning funds will be spent on Shadow.  There was discussion of potential for multi-year cleaning in Shadow.

l Discussion of wall repairs/replacement at Birchwood.

l More beaver locations were identified.  They have started cutting down trees in some Mountain Lakes park areas.  For a brief description of beavers, see the following website: http://www.nhptv.org/Natureworks/beaver.htm

Beaver are up to twice as long and ten times heavier than the muskrats found in all the lakes in Mountain Lakes.  For more information than most people can use about muskrats, including recipes, see the following website: http://my.net-link.net/~vaneselk/muskrat/

There was discussion of Giardia, sometimes known as “beaver feaver”.  See the following websites as examples of information available on Giardia: http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/communicable_diseases/en/giardia.htm  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=3682082&dopt=Abstract

Allied Biological:

l Allied Biological reviewed oxygen levels with aerator.  Oxygen levels lower than anticipated though more constant than in past.

l Applications of alum planned for Birchwood and Grunden's.  Coordinated with Swim Team.

l Most of Mountain Lake is showing native Naiad growth; this provides a nutrient sink to hold down algae growth by reducing nutrients available.

l Alum prices have been rising.  No impact on Mountain Lakes’ budget this year.
