Borough of Mountain Lakes

Lakes Management Advisory Committee

July 2006 Issues

l  Discussion of improvements in Website, increasing transparency to public.

l Discussion of Borough budget issues and impact on Lakes projects.

l Discussion of fecal coliform levels.  One sample showed spike to near the beach closing level set by the State.  Prior and subsequent samples at all locations were within guidelines.  The following are NJ State government documents bearing on beach water quality.  http://www.state.nj.us/dep/watershedmgt/DOCS/tmdlfactsheet2.pdf

l Algae treatment necessary for Olive and the coves on Mountain Lake.

l Discussions of oxygen levels with aerator at Birchwood.  Oxygen levels still lower than anticipated, possibly due to the physical transport of low oxygen water throughout the water column.  Committee discussed diffusor and volume model and ways to experiment to determine better use of aeration.  Allied recommends 6 to 10 Biological Oxygen Demand samples and three sediment samples to guide treatment.  The Borough Manager will have to determine if that is possible within 2006 budget.
