Recreation Committee Meeting – September 21, 2010

1.       Minutes – June 15, 2010 minutes were approved.

 

 

  1. Director’s Report

§         Summer Camp –Almost 300 kids attended summer camp, up from 240 kids in 2009. 

§         Jazz Camp – Mr. G and Jan Danrigier ran 2 hour jazz camp for 2 weeks for 16 5th – 8th graders.  Went very well.

§         Lax Camp - Mrs. Dietrich oversaw a girls lax camp for grades 2-4 (one week) and 5-7 (one week).

§         Park Ranger and Facilities

 

Park Ranger had mixed reviews.  No formal complaints were made on abuse of town facilities.  Problem area is off hour use of tennis facilities by non-residents.  The Commission recommends to Council creating a controlled access vehicle.

 

The Commission agreed to recommend to Council charge $100 fee to any private groups who want to use facilities at Island Beach or Birchwood for private functions.  Exempt from fee are town associated groups or clubs.  The Commission also agreed to recommend to Council a new beach tag fee schedule for nannies.

 

§         Shack at Island – The Allisons ran Birchwood and the Plantes ran the Shack at Island.  No problems.

 

 

  1. Beach Director Report: Dede gave a short summary of the summer beach program.  Had some issues with lifeguards being hurt or took other jobs.  Beaches stayed open until 8/27, and only closed twice during summer due to geese excrement.  No safety issues arose.

 

 

  1. Summer

§         Rugby – 85 kids did the summer rugby camp.

§         Tennis – Kathy Rohan and Joe Hollis both ran successful programs in the summer.

 

 

  1. Fall Sports

§         Field Hockey – clinic has started for 3rd – 6th graders.  Formal program for 7th & 8th graders.

§         A Pilates course is beginning at the library.

 

  1. Special Events

§         Halloween Event – Celia proposed creating a larger Halloween event on the day before Halloween which could include pumpkin carving, costume awards, Halloween crafts, dramatic readings, scary movies, hayrides, etc.  Volunteers needed.

§         PCA – Tentatively scheduled for Thursday, October 28 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm for a parents clinic at Mountain Lakes High School and a coaches clinic at Saturday, December 4  from 8:30 – 10:30 am.

Steve asked that we go thru Rec membership at next meeting.  Celia will call a potential new member.
