Minutes of Meeting

February 11, 2010

In attendance: Commissioners – H. Carr, J. Best, S. Marshall, M. Vyff.

Council Liaison – E. Emr

1.     There were no comments from the public.

2.     The January minutes were approved with 2 corrections.

3.     Membership: Laura Conner submitted her resignation as she has secured a full time teaching position.  Since Laura indicated willingness to continue participation in the summer P&R inspections, Sue will speak with her about remaining on the Commission as an alternate.  Prospective member Consuelo Murtagh attended the meeting to learn more about the work of the Commission.

4.     P&R bid specs: The Prune and Remove bid specs were prepared differently this year, allowing the Borough more flexibility in removing or adding work to be performed.  The bid opening was last Friday, and Barry Lewis will award the contract to the lowest bidder(s).

5.     2008 CSIP grant: The Commission used $9,950 of the $16,382.86 planting grant.  Joan prepared a memo to Barry with materials, figures and pictures to justify the request to transfer this amount to Prune and Removal.

6.     Street Tree Management Plans:  131 Lake Drive is requesting removal of 2 trees to accommodate a circular driveway.  The Commission approved the request, with a request for a small tree between the drive and the street.   1 Hillcrest is moving the house to allow for new construction of another house on the property.  The street tree management plan requires protection of 5 Basswood trees.  All Commissioners were requested to keep a watchful eye that the fencing remains in place.

7.     Arbor Day: Arbor Day falls on May 1.  Marnie will run the event again this year. She will consult with Paul Odenwelder regarding the planning.  The Commission discussed several suggested honorees and unanimously voted for Jay Eveleth who has been an integral member of the Commission for several years, first as a regular and now as an alternate.  The suggestion of the Cerbo Family was tabled until next year in conjunction with the centennial celebration.  Marnie found several appropriate stories for a play and will consult with Jenny Smith of the Junior Nature Club for final selection.  Discussion of sapling distribution brought mixed opinions, and a final determination will be made after discussions with Paul.

8.     Centennial: Sue and Heather will work on Ò100 trees for 100 years.Ó  They will speak with Tony Cerbo regarding details and logistics.

9.     Website links: Joan will review the Commission web page to be sure we show links to the NJ Shade Tree Federation.  If not, she will pass it on to Tom next meeting.
