Mountain Lakes Shade Tree Commission

Minutes of Meeting

March 11, 2010

Commissioners in attendance: S. Marshall, J. Best, M. Vyff, T. Caine, C. Murtagh, J. Eveleth and H. Carr

1.     There where no comments from the public.

2.     February minutes were approved with one correction.

3.     Consuelo Murtagh was welcomed as a new commissioner.  She will complete the unexpired term of Bonnie Rosenthall.

4.     The Arbor Day ad has been submitted and will be included in the April issue of the H&SA Bulletin.  Marnie has been in contact with Mr Odenwelder about the event to be held on April 30th.  There is a full schedule of activities planned to celebrate Arbor Day.  Joan will write a few words about Jay and introduce him at the festivities.  The first grade will sing a song, Dr Kasmark will speak and evergreen seedlings will be distributed to first grade students only.  Either a few students in the 5th grade or one high school student will read The Little Acorn story aloud.  The Arbor Day honorary tree will probably be planted in the parking area of Wildwood School.  Other details were discussed.  The poster contest theme will be how trees help combat global warming.

5.     Prune and remove work is in progress.  Greenwood Tree is doing the prunes and Tree Tech the removals.

All commissioners are comfortable continuing to oversee their own areas so Consuelo was assigned to take over BonnieÕs area.

This year, John Linson, the Borough Forester, will be writing the updated 2011- 2015 version of our Community Forestry Management Plan.  We also need to decide on a plan for the frequency with which John inspects the BoroughÕs small parks and well-traveled wooded paths.  Some areas will be looked at yearly and others on a bi-yearly basis.  Joan, Heather and Sue will form a committee to determine what areas will be included and the frequency of inspection.

6.     Tom will add the NJ Shade Tree Federation website as a link from our web page.

7.     The Woods and Lakes Run Committee offered to donate two or three trees to be planted at Birchwood Beach as a thank you to the Borough for hosting the race for the past 33 years.

Commissioners will keep an eye on the tree work being done in their areas.

Next meeting will be held on April 8th
