Minutes of Meeting

June 10, 2010

Commissioners in attendance: S. Marshall, J. Best, M. Vyff, C. Murtagh, J. Eveleth and H. Carr

Council Liaison E. Emr

Before the meeting officially began there was a discussion on a memorial tree request that was made by a group called ÒThe Women of the Woods.Ó  It was brought to the attention of Consuelo.  They would like to plant a tree in memory of Lisa Gannon.  The STC has also been notified of another honorary tree request.  Tony needs to be contacted to see if he will plant a few trees for us this fall and at what cost.

Marnie handed the Arbor Day tree file to Joan.  Joan will add copies of the proclamation and put the file at DPW.

Sue spoke of the historical significance of the tree species, the Dawn Redwood.  There may be one available to plant on Borough property.  Sue and Joan will be in charge.

The meeting officially came to order.

1.     There were no comments from the public.

2.     May minutes were approved with one correction.

3.     Tree Tech is doing the removals and is still not finished.  The work has been slow going this year and has gone into the summer season.  This is not how our P&R has gone in past years.  It works better when all tree work is completed by early spring.  We will try to coordinate with the Borough Manager and tree contractors to get this work done earlier next year.

4.     Joan distributed procedure lists for recording the P&R information on the computer at DPW.   In order to remember details more clearly, she would like us to try to record soon after we walk each section of our areas.  We will mark all trees in wooded areas with white paint, an X, 4Õ up for removals and a dot, 6Ó from the ground for pruning.  In this way contractors will be able to find these trees more easily.

5.     The Business Stimulus Grant agreement with the state was finalized as of May 28th.  The work does not have to be completed in this calendar year so we will wait until fall to determine which areas to target and to hire a contractor.  Sue and Joan have identified some possible locations for invasive tree removal: Esplanade, West Shore & Roberts Road Intersection, Birchwood Lake bank behind the beach.  Invasive trees will be removed, including stumps.

6.     It may be necessary to water the new trees planted last fall.  We will also fertilize these trees this summer to assure their survival.  One tree on the Boulevard has died but most are in good shape.

7.     Other/New Business

Tree tubes at the far end of the High School fields need to be removed.  This

might be a good project for High School students who need service hours.

Next meeting will be held on September 9th
