Library Services

The library is a member of M.A.I.N., Inc., a network of 37 libraries. Patrons have access to the collections of all 37 libraries -- over 2 million titles through an On-line Public Access Catalog. The catalog can be accessed at the library or remotely, through the library web page.

Online, patrons can search the catalog, place Holds/Reserves on circulating materials, view all materials charged to them and renew their materials. Patrons may also access Online Databases and download audio books.

The Library has a Reference section; current periodicals, including Morningstar and Value Line; daily newspapers; special sections for new fiction, non-fiction and travel books; large print books; audio books; videos and DVDs; compact discs and music cassettes.

A photocopy machine is available, as well as FAX service (costs vary for each), and a public typewriter.

Children's Department

The Childrenís Room has materials suitable for non-readers to young adults. Fiction, including picture books, Easy Readers and Chapter Books, non-fiction, biographies, reference books, junior audio books and magazines are located in this section.

There are also computers available with a selection of Educational software.

The Library sponsors Story Time sessions throughout the year for pre-schoolers. A theme program is held in the summer months for children in grades Kó5 as well as pre-schoolers. Special events occur frequently and are advertised throughout the community.

There is a separate TEEN Area with fiction, non-fiction and biography sections.

Library Cards

All residents of Mountain Lakes are entitled to a library card that can be used at any library in Morris County. The first card is free of charge. Lost cards can be replaced for $2.00. Children may have a card when they are in the first grade and can write their name. A parent must sign each childís registration card and is responsible for all materials borrowed using the card.

Non-residents who are employed in Mountain Lakes may be entitled to a Courtesy Card at no charge for a period of one year. It can be used for materials and services in the Mountain Lakes Library and the Morris County Library only. This privilege can be renewed.

Boonton Township residents may purchase a Family Membership Card. This is a unique Morris County Library card, valid at the County Library and Mountain Lakes Library only. The annual fee for this card is set by M.A.I.N., Inc., the consortia of Morris County Libraries, and the Board of Trustees of the Mountain Lakes Library.

All other Morris County Library cards are valid only at the Morris County Library and cannot be used to either borrow materials or to obtain other library services at the Mountain Lakes Library.

All materials except Circuit materials, may be returned to any library in Morris County. Circuit materials must be returned to the Mountain Lakes Library.

Reference materials and periodicals do not circulate, except when otherwise indicated.

Most materials may be renewed online, in person or by telephone, providing there is no hold/reserve. Certain videos and DVDís may not be renewed online.

Public Computers

Computers for public use are available for accessing the on-line catalog, the Internet, full-text magazine and newspaper databases, and other reference resources, as well as email and Microsoft Office and Open Office.

There is high-speed Internet connectivity and Wireless Internet Access is available for patronís use.

Printing charges are five free pages and $0.10 per each additional page. Sign-in is required for computer use and time limits may be imposed.


The Library provides an unencripted WiFi HotSpot available to all.

Patron Responsibilities

A patron is responsible for all materials charged out on his or her card. A parent or guardian is responsible for all materials charged out by juveniles (defined as under 18 years of age) for whom they have signed membership applications. Damages beyond reasonable wear will be assessed by the library and paid by the patron. Any lost materials will be charged to the patron.

Videocassettes and DVDs must be charged on an adult card with that adult present.

Children (under 18 years) are not allowed to charge out videos/DVDs.
