Elimination of the Borough’s Green Bag Program

Dear Mountain Lakes Resident,

You spoke, and we listened.

Based on several factors, including your feedback on the Solid Waste Resident Survey we conducted this spring, the Borough will be discontinuing its green bag (pay-as-you-throw) program at the end of the calendar year.

Effective January 1, 2023, Mountain Lakes residents will no longer be required to purchase green bags to dispose of trash. Instead, you will simply place your trash into any trash bags you choose, with a standard weekly allotment per household equivalent to two (2) standard-sized trash cans (approx. 30-35 gallons in size), not exceeding fifty (50) pounds each.

To meet your needs through the end of 2022, green trash bags are still available for purchase from Borough Hall (420 Boulevard), Kings Supermarket and Ace Hardware. Once Kings Supermarket and Ace Hardware deplete their current supply of green bags, you will be directed to purchase them from Borough Hall, where they will remain available through the end of the year.

More details about next year’s trash and recycling services will be coming soon. We are in the process of finalizing a multi-year solid waste contract. Once the final contract is approved, we will share additional information about these important services, so please keep an eye out for more communications from the Borough later this year.
