Learn the history of your Mountain Lakes home.  Peruse original maps of the town. See how Herbert Hapgood advertised his planned residential community in his early brochures.  All this, plus plenty of historical  items will be on sale at the Historic Preservation Committee Open House on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The Open House, which will be held in the downstairs meeting room at the library, will also open the door to the HPC archives, allowing residents the opportunity to see the climate controlled room that houses the borough’s cache of historic photos and documents.  Many of these items will be on display.  And borough archivist Rob Infante will be on hand to help homeowners delve into the history of their home, perhaps by reading Hapgood’s original work orders or learning the names of previous owners.

During the Open House, orders for high-quality copies (photo or digital) of original house photos can be placed. And orders for Hapgood and Belhall plaques will be taken, with a special Open House price of $200 in effect.  That’s $50 off the normal price. In addition, there will be note cards, audio walking tour CDs, a limited quantity of original Mountain Lakes maps from the 1940s and a small quantity of Centennial items for sale.

The HPC preservation shed on Tower Hill will also be open on Sat., Nov. 3, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.  HPC members will be available to help you browse through the salvaged Hapgood and Belhall parts for your renovation projects. Note: salvage items are available only to Hapgood and Belhall owners.
