Student Member on the Environmental & Shade Tree Commissions of Mountain Lake

The Mountain Lakes Environmental Commission (MLEC) and Shade Tree Commission (MLSTC) are seeking interested Mountain Lakes High School Students to become Members of these important Mountain Lakes Borough Commissions. This is a unique opportunity for students with an interest in Environmental Studies, Sustainability, and Community Leadership to serve the Mountain Lakes Community.

Scope of the Role: The Student Member would be appointed starting December 1, 2017, and participate in MLEC meetings (held 7:30-9;00 pm, 3nd Tuesday of the month); contribute to planning Mountain Lakes Commission programs in the community; and, serve as a liaison with the Mountain Lakes schools. The time commitment would be approximately 2-4 hr. per month.

Qualifications: A student from Mountain Lakes High School, interested in serving the community and being in good standing with the school.

Application Process: Interested students should complete the attached brief application and submit via email to Kevin Driscoll by October 27, 2017. The successful applicant will be informed by Nov 27, 2017.

Mountain Lakes Environmental Commission (for details –

The Environmental Commission’s Mission is to advise and educate the municipal government, the Planning and Zoning Boards, and the residents about environmental issues that impact the Borough.

Examples of Commission responsibilities include:

  • Inform the planning and zoning boards of adjustment about environmental impacts of proposals for development
  • Investigate environmental problems and offer solutions
  • Inform residents on environmental matters including ways to help protect the environment
  • Interact with neighboring commissions and other organizations to tackle regional and state problems
  • Study and make recommendations concerning open space preservation, water resources management, air pollution control, solid waste management, noise control, soil and landscape protection, environmental appearance, marine resources and protection of the flora and fauna.
  • Maintain an inventory of the natural resources of the community


Mountain Lakes Shade Tree Commission (for details –

The Shade Tree Commission is committed to the development, maintenance and promotion of a sustainable, safe and productive shade tree resource that benefits the physical, environmental and social well-being of the community, and preserves the historical climate and character of the borough.

Examples of Commission responsibilities include:

  • Evaluation and Inventory of Tree’s in the Right of Way
  • Reduce Risk and Liability for the Community
  • Support the Value of Mountain Lakes through improved Air Quality, Property Values, Water Quality, Animal Habitat, and overall Climate Impact
  • Develop and Maintain a 5 Year Community Forestry Management Plan (CFMP)
