Trash Pick Up
Homeside pickup for garbage and recycling is based on your election district as follows:
- District 1 – Monday
- District 2 – Tuesday
- District 3 – Wednesday
- District 4 – Thursday
- District 5 – Friday
“Homeside” refers to any location adjacent to the garage or within six feet of your house. Keep the location consistent to ensure pickup. There is one pickup per week for both garbage and recyclables. Pick-up begins at 7:30 a.m. and occurs daily with the exception of Christmas Day when it will be picked up the following day.
Garbage must be contained in green “Mountain Lakes” bags. Bags are sold in packets of 10. The current price is $25 for 30-gallon size and $12.50 for 15-gallon size, and and can be purchased at:
- Borough Hall
- Anchor Hardware on Route 46
- King’s Supermarket
The filled garbage bags must be placed in a suitable container so that animals are not able to get into the trash. Bags must be tied at the top to prevent overfill and must weigh less than 50 pounds. Untied and/or overfilled bags will not be picked up.
Source separation is mandated by law under the New Jersey Source Separation and Recycling Act (N.J.S.A. 13:1E-99 et. seq.). This means that all waste generators in Morris County are required to separate recyclables from trash. Commingled recyclables (glass, plastic and metal) need to be placed in a reusable container that the hauler will empty and leave at your house. Paper and fiber products need to be placed in a container that the hauler will take like a paper (not plastic) bag, so that it does not contaminate the commingled when placed in the hauler’s barrel.
The range of recyclables has been expanded with a new contract effective January 1, 2013. Current detail of recyclable materials accepted for collection in Mountain Lakes can be found on the Residential Guide to Dual Bin Recycling. Under the current contract, the Borough owns the recyclable material and receives direct dollar benefit for the sale of recyclables to the various markets. Clean and uncontaminated recyclable materials have more value on the market. Therefore, IT IS IMPERATIVE that all acceptable recyclables are CLEAN, and are kept CONTAMINANT FREE. Clean means that the items must be free of residual food and dirt. Contaminant Free means that only acceptable recyclables be included. Remember, you own it — it is in your best interest to do it right.
There are designated drop off areas at the Borough Recycling Center for various recyclables. The facility is open to Borough residents Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 4:00 pm and Saturday 7:00 am 2:00 pm. Extended hours are in effect during October and November on Saturdays and Sundays. Compost and mulch, if available, may be picked up during these same hours. Recyclable materials picked up at your home may also be brought to the Recycling Center:
- Commingled — One dumpster is provided for clean commingled plastics, bottles and cans. NO PAPER OR PLASTIC BAGS IN THIS DUMPSTER. Use the scrap metal dumpster for all hard metals.
- Mixed Paper — One dumpster is provided for mixed paper. Shredded paper needs to be contained in clear or opaque plastic bags tied at the top. DO NOT PUT ANY OTHER PLASTIC BAGS OR NON-PAPER ITEMS IN THIS DUMPSTER.
- Scrap Metal — Appliances and hard metals (steel and aluminum) may be deposited in the Scrap Metal dumpster. Hard metals may not be included with the co-mingled bottles and cans.
- Electronic Waste — Computers, TV’s, printers, fax machines, cell phones and all other electronic waste may be placed outside the E-Waste container. Department personnel will stack the container for maximum load.
- Styrofoam – One dumpster is provided for CLEAN styrofoam (#6); remove any foreign matter such as tape, stickers, labels and stickers. NO PACKING PEANUTS ALLOWED.
- Motor Oil and Anti-Freeze — Dispose of used motor oil and anti-freeze in designated containers.
- Batteries — Alkaline and carbon zinc non-rechargeable batteries (AAA, AA, C, D & 9V) manufactured after 1994 contain only trace amounts of mercury, are not recycled, and should be thrown out in the trash. Dispose of lead-acid batteries (automotive) in the shed area marked “Batteries.” Rechargeable batteries (and cell phones) are collected for recycling in the designated box in the DPW office.
- Tires — Whole tires may be left in the “tire” shed.
- Clothing — Leave clothing and shoes ONLY, in the designated bins. Any donations left outside the bins will be thrown away.
- Books — Deposit used and unwanted books in the green book bin. All usable books will be donated to charity organizations or resold. Any unusable books will be property recycled.
- Leaves — Deposit leaves in the area marked “Leaves Only” — NO plastic bags.
- Mixed brush — Deposit brush in the area marked “Brush.”
- Grass Clippings — Grass clippings are not accepted at this facility.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle & Other Options
There are many options for reducing the amount of trash you generate.
Gently used items can be donated. Local area community donation centers include Big Brothers Big Sisters at 307 Route 46 East in Denville, and Goodwill at 266 Route 46 East in Rockaway. The Morris County MUA website offers an extensive list of local alternatives including internet based exchange links.

- Trash Days — There are two scheduled bulky trash day programs each year, Friday and Saturday at the end of April and October, for residents of Mountain Lakes. Bulky trash that is not normally picked up can be taken to the Borough Garage on those days. Hazardous waste other than E-Waste is prohibited.
- There is a charge per vehicle. Cash and checks are accepted.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)
Petroleum-based products, chemicals and many cleaning supplies need to be stored in a safe place away from children, and properly disposed of at a certified hazardous waste collection site.
- MCMUA Sponsored Disposal Days — The MCMUA sponsors several Hazardous Waste and disposal days. See MCMUA – HHW Events for dates as well as a listing of acceptable materials.

Unwanted, unused or expired medications should be properly disposed of for several reasons. When thrown out with the trash or flushed down the toilet, medications have the potential to contaminate our environment, and particularly our water supply. Water treatment does not necessarily remove all drug residues from our drinking water. Medications kept around the house or thrown in the trash bin can inadvertently end up being ingested by children, grandchildren or pets.The safest and most responsible way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications is to take them to a collection site specifically set up for this purpose.
- National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day – The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. - Project Medicine Drop – Secured drop boxes have been placed in the headquarters of local police departments. Consumers from anywhere in New Jersey can visit the boxes seven days a week, to drop off unneeded and expired medications. For drop box locations, see http://www.nj.gov/oag/ca/meddrop/.
- Syringes – For proper disposal of used syringes, register for the needle exchange program at the front desk of any hospital.
Grass — Cut It and Leave It
Grass clippings are a major part of New Jersey’s municipal solid waste stream. Like other highly recyclable materials, recycling grass clippings can help reduce the amount of waste for disposal. As a Mountain Lakes resident, you are already helping to reduce the amount of waste you generate by recycling your newspapers, metal cans, plastic bottles, glass jars and junk mail. You can also easily recycle the grass clippings you generate each time you mow your lawn — and save time and money while doing it. Remember, Morris County no longer allows grass clippings to be disposed of with the regular garbage. Landfilling grass clippings is a waste of money, landfill space and nutrients contained in the clippings themselves.So what can you do? Just leave your clippings on the lawn when you mow. In fact, studies show that homeowners who leave clippings on the lawn actually reduce their total annual mowing by 20-25%. Grass clippings provide a natural and healthy fertilizer for a growing lawn. You’ll spend less on chemical fertilizers since clippings left on the lawn recycle nutrients back into the soil.
To maintain your lawn properly, avoid mowing more than the top third of the growing grass. Done consistently, this will result in an attractive, neatly trimmed lawn because the small clippings disappear when they filter down to the soil. Most New Jersey lawns thrive when mowed to about 2 to 3 inches, especially in the summer. The taller grass will shade the soil, cool roots and prevent weeds, resulting in a healthier lawn.
Mulching mowers or mulching attachments on regular mowers chop clippings into fine pieces which slip easily down to the soil. A study conducted by the University of Connecticut found that the nitrogen from grass clippings showed up in the growing grass within two weeks, promoting thick green growth and a strong root system. By the end of the third year of the study, researchers estimated that about a third of the nitrogen found in grass came from previously recycled clippings. Annually, this adds nearly 2 pounds of nitrogen to each thousand square feet of lawn.
Yard waste can be recycled back to the soil. A significant volume of our trash (18% yard waste and 8% food scraps) can be kept out of the waste stream through composting. Compost is a dark, crumbly and earthy smelling form of decomposing organic matter. The decomposition and recycling of organic wastes is an essential part of soil building and healthy plant growth in forests, meadows and in your own home garden.
Composting is the most practical and convenient way to handle your yard wastes. Compost improves the soil and plants growing in it. Use it to enrich flower and vegetable gardens, improve the soil around trees and shrubs, and enrich soils in houseplants and planter boxes. Chipped woody waste makes excellent mulch or path material. By composting, you return organic matter to the soil in a usable form. Organic matter in the soil helps to break up heavy clay soils, adds water and nutrient-holding capacity to sandy soils, and adds essential nutrients to any soil. Improving the soil is the first step toward improving the health of your plants.
Anything that once was alive can be composted. Yard wastes such as fallen leaves, grass clippings, weeds, and spent flower and vegetable plants make excellent compost. Kitchen scraps from raw vegetables also make great compost. Do not compost meat scraps of any sort, diseased or insect-ridden plants, weeds with seeds, dog and cat feces, or unchopped woody waste. Meat, bones and fatty foods (cheese, salad dressing, etc.) should be placed in the trash.
